I commonly see Mallard Ducks in pairs. Here a female and male are sitting next to the pond.

On a later hike, I came across some bones on a trail that looked like they were from a good-sized bird.

And then I came to the pond and saw this male mallard and no female. I realized that the bones I had seen probably were the remains of the female.
