Insects and Spiders - Butterflies, Moths, and Caterpillars : Variable Checkerspot Butterfly
Euphydryas chalcedona
Woolly Indian Paintbrush is a host plant for several Checkerspot butterflies. Here are photos of Variable Checkerspot larvae (caterpillars) on Indian paintbrush.
At least two caterpillars in this photo.
Two more--of very different sizes--on dried woolly Indian paintbrush seed pods.
To the left of the caterpillar, you can see some of the damage to the plant the caterpillars have caused.
More plant damage from the caterpillars. For more information on Woolly Indian Paintbrush, click here.
Love those vivid colors!
