I have seen this plant in other locations around the region, but didn't spot it at Rockville until late spring in 2019. It is a parasitic plant that grows on the roots of chaparral shrubs, usually Chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum). Then I found a second--larger--plant in the summer of 2019.

| It didn't take long for this little plant to start drying out. Notice the two additional clusters sprouting out from the base. They are visible in the next photo also. |
