Chaparral Broomrape
Orobanche bulbosa
Previous Plant    Back to Thumbnails    Next Plant

I have seen this plant in other locations around the region, but didn't spot it at Rockville until late spring in 2019. It is a parasitic plant that grows on the roots of chaparral shrubs, usually Chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum). Then I found a second--larger--plant in the summer of 2019.

It's a very small specimen!

Thank you to the ant for adding some scale!

When you're right next to the trail in the chaparral, a speeding bike can fill you up with debris in no time.

It didn't take long for this little plant to start drying out. Notice the two additional clusters sprouting out from the base. They are visible in the next photo also.

An overhead shot with the two sprouting clusters on the right.

This is the second Chaparral Broomrape plant I found at Rockville.

It is a little larger than the first plant.

Summer of 2020.
