Amphibians - California Toad
Anaxyrus boreas halophilus
That's a whole lot of toad tadpoles!
A comparison of the much larger (and lighter) American Bullfrog (
Lithobates catesbeianus
) tadpole and a smaller, darker Western Toad tadpole.
In the springtime, you can find lots of these toads hopping around the edges of the lake.
The light stripe down the middle of the back is an identifying feature of Western Toads.
But sometimes the stripe is not very prominent.
This toad is much paler and rounder than most.
Cute bedfellows--a Western Toad and a Coast Range Fence Lizard at naptime.
