Fungi - Lion's-mane Fungus
Hericium erinaceus
This is the first "classic" Lion's-mane Fungus I found at Rockville--in 2024. What a beauty!
The first time I saw the fungus, it was just a small, compact ball.
Three weeks later, the fungus had doubled or tripled.
Here you can see some of the spines that usually make the fungus recognizable.
Since the fungus was situated on top of the stump, some of its spines were rather flattened.
The inside of the fungus was dense and fuzzy.
As February came around--with very little rain--the fungus dried out.
