Yellow Brain Fungus can be differentiated from Golden Ear Fungus by what it grows on. Both fungi parasitize other types of fungi. Yellow Brain Fungus grows on Peniophora fungi on tree trunks and branches. Golden Ear Fungus grows on Stereum fungi on rotted wood. The white on the surface of this branch might be a Peniophora fungus.
