Over the years of the California Drought (2012 to 2017) the manzanita trees seemed to be okay. When the rains returned, however, many of them simply fell apart, their dead insides finally giving way.
This tree seemed mostly healthy, but you can see how there was a little damage at the top of the limb.
This tree tried to split, but then found some nearby support (next photo).
A number of Manzanitas in this same area went down. It broke my heart!
This is one that was obviously dead and just fell apart.
Sometimes surgery can save the tree.
Other times the surgery goes awry.
Not sure what happened here--I don't think that this split two directions all by itself.
And I'm left to wonder how this will affect the Indian Warrior swaths.
